The human ground is a modern skilling hub with the vision to make work more human – in a rapidly changing world.
Dr. Amy Jane Griffiths, a licensed psychologist and entrepreneur, has built innovative programs and teams in various workplace settings. Through her education, work, life experiences, and collaborations with colleagues and friends (Thanks, Diane and Maya!), she noticed our environments, colleagues, and friends were not set up to anticipate the rapidly changing world and manage the stress associated with such change and uncertainty.
Amy and her collaborators observed feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, and uncertainty in themselves, their clients, and their teams- which often led to shortsighted decision-making and poor work-life balance. They were dismayed to find that few educational institutions, organizations, and coaching services provided the necessary skills and opportunities for relevant growth and grounding. Amy came to ask how we can help humans find their footing while the ground is constantly moving.
This question led her to investigate and understand the skillsets, cultures, and environments required to “center the human” in work - while helping individuals find meaning in their lives and thrive.
Our Guiding Question:
How can we help humans find their footing while the ground is constantly moving?
Through this work, she met Rachel Torres. Rachel has always sought to understand the world and those around her through stories. In her work with students and families over the last decade as a teacher, school psychologist, and researcher, she has heard dynamic, meaningful stories, many of which center on self-discovery, overcoming challenges, and accessing happiness. Similar to Amy’s experiences, in her work with young people, her research, and in talking to friends and colleagues, she often encountered people working hard to remain in the present while simultaneously preparing for the anticipatory dysfunction of the future. This often left her wondering how we remain grounded and delight in this moment while taking strategic, perhaps scary, steps to grow authentically towards the next. How do we access curiosity and pleasure in occupational self-discovery while managing self-doubt, anxiety, and fear?
Rachel, a school psychologist and doctoral student, worked with Amy to answer some of these critical questions. We combined relevant research, real-time labor market data, and aspects of psychological well-being to understand and intervene from a holistic perspective.
Collectively, we have spent years successfully (and let’s be honest...sometimes unsuccessfully) addressing these issues in our workplaces. We understood that to find our place in the modern workplace (and beyond), we must begin by creating connections, developing community, and building capability. We have done this by helping individuals develop skills to connect to work, others, and themselves. Coming from different generations, we learned to bring our unique wisdom to these critical issues and find common ground when identifying effective interventions for individuals.
Once we combined our knowledge, experiences, and intergenerational humanness, we developed an approach to building a trusted space in which humans can come together to gain guidance and build toward something meaningful. Together, we can confidently take control of our collective work narrative.
